House Lifts Cuban American Family Travel Restrictions

February 25, 2009 – Washington, DC – Congressman José E. Serrano announced that his provisions loosening restrictions on Cuban American family travel were included in the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill that passed the House today. Serrano chairs the House Appropriations Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee, which oversees the budget of the Treasury Department, enforcer of the Cuba travel ban.

Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis Officially Confirmed as the Secretary of Labor for the Obama Administration.

Washington, D.C., February 24, 2009 – Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis made history today as the first Latina to be nominated and confirmed as a secretary in a Presidential cabinet.  Secretary Solis was confirmed today, February 24, 2009 after a vote of 80-18.

This column is dedicated to the same objectives as that of the great journalist H L Menken that is  “to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable :

Who helped Obama sweep the Puerto Rican vote un New York city? Many independent progressive PUERTO Rican and Latino activists  none of which belonged to the Bronx Democratic machine. Among those missing were then Bronx Boss  Assemblyman Jose Rivera and Borough President Aldolfo Carrión, both who originally supported Hillary Clinton. Carrión did make some post primary appearances for OBAMA  but locally he and  Rivera did nothing to inspire the forces.

100,000-plus Citizen Children Find Parents Deported

Serrano Releases DHS Study Showing Families Being Torn Apart

February 13, 2009 – Washington DC – Congressman José E. Serrano released a study today showing that the Department of Homeland Security has deported more than 100,000 parents of children who are U.S. citizens. The report, which Serrano asked DHS to produce, also showed that this number could be higher if records were more complete.

Latino Institute Tell Justice Dept. To Stop NYC Term Limits Changes.

Calling it discriminatory against Latinos and other racial-ethnic minorities, the National Institute for Latino Policy (NiLP) has written to the Department of Justice to ask that the Attorney General to block the implementation of changes in New York City’s term limits law. Calling it “retrogressive” in setting back gains made by Latinos in representation in elected public office, the Institute called the term limits measure, Local Law 51, a violation of the federal Voting Rights Act.

Chegüi would feel comfortable in all communities and those that were in the streets saw Chegüi on many occasions. That is why the South Bronx community has spontaneously organized a Memorial Tribute & Prayer Service to commemorate the life of: Chegüi – A People’s Champion.

There were two football games yesterday. The Super Bowl in Tampa and the Ben Gay Bowl in the South Bronx. The Super Bowl gets world publicity, but the Ben Gay Bowl has more family values.
