by Alfonzo Beal on April 16, 2009

Bronx, NY: What the elected officials did not do and the general corporate media let ride, the incredible get-over tactics of the NY Yankees are finally being challenged by grass root community residents and activist. The sleeping giant (South Bronx community) if awaken will be the greatest challenge the Yankees will face this season in a game that they can’t win. Because old saying say’s it all: “The People United Will Never Be Defeated.”

“YANKEES WIN/ SOUTH BRONX LOSES,” SAY ACTIVISTS

Yesterday, The Friends of the South Bronx, a community organization made up of residents, business owners and community organizers that have been helping South Bronx organizations for over a decade announced a protest to be held on April 18 at 3 p.m. at Yankee Stadium and 161st Street and River Avenue. The protest is to highlight what the South Bronx has lost – while the Yankees celebrate their new “palace” built in the poorest Congressional district in the United States.

Speaking for the group, Hector Soto stated: “The only winners in the Yankee Stadium/ South Bronx community benefits agreement was the New York Yankees and some Bronx politicians.”

The organization has been speaking to residents and business owners and listening to many issues and concerns that the immediate community has about the stadium, but felt that no one was listening, or cared. The group criticized the delay in the replacement of parkland and the failure of the Yankees and the politicians to deliver $800,000 a year to community organizations as specified in the plan.

“Those most affected by the new Stadium are in the community surrounding the stadium here in the South Bronx,” stated Rafael Andaluz. He added, “The example of All Hallows High School losing its home fields and incurring thousands of dollars in travel expenses is just the tip of the iceberg.”

The group claims that many of the Bronx politicians who negotiated with the Yankees received only benefits for themselves (campaign contributors, patronage, contracts for friends and allies) and not for the benefit of the South Bronx.”

“The Yankees need to treat us as real neighbors, not as foreigners,” stated Ms. Alexis Camacho a local resident.

The protest will be held Saturday, April 18th at 3 p.m., one half hour before the Yankee game begins. The group will be sending newly appointed Bishop Dolan a special invitation hoping he visits the South Bronx before going to the new stadium.
