Boricuas For A Positive Image Protest New ABC “Show Work It.”

Last night, Hispanics tuned in to watch the new show “Work It” on ABC and support Puerto Rican actor Amaury Nolasco, who landed one of the leads in the show. To their dismay, less than 10mins into the show, the culture was attacked by an insensitive stereotype when Amaury said the line “I’m Puerto Rican, I would be great at selling drugs.” In response, NYC grass root organization “Boricuas for a Positive Image” will be standing in front of ABC tonight between 5:30 and 6:30 PM to stand up for justice and right the wrong that has been done by “Work It” writers who negatively portrayed the community that supports their show and the culture of the actor made to say the line.

To understand the weight of what was done, please see the show at the 8:40 mark where the line is said. http://abc.go.com/watch/work-it/SH55126595/VD55160702/pilot

Puerto Ricans and other Latinos are being called to come and show that we are Puerto Rican Professionals, Students, Business Leaders, Workers, Mothers, Fathers, NOT DRUG DEALERS

The organizers will be asking for a meeting with ABC to address the basis for this insensitivity that cannot be tolerated.

WHAT: Protest tonight

WHERE: ABC studios 7 Lincoln Square (2 train to 72nd street and local to 66 Lincoln Center)

TIME: 5:30 -6:30PM

DISCRIMIATION AGAINST ONE IS DISCRMINATION AGAINST ALL!

Let Latinos show their power TODAY!

Amaury is partly to blame. When presented with such a line, I’d shove it up the writer’s orifice. Boricuas should ALL have dignity. Some don’t, and that makes it harder to the rest of us.

It’s not the only ABC show guilty of trashing Puertoricans. I stopped tuning into this show when this episode of Suburgatory aired. After the 10min mark the white lady exclaimed in disgust ‘that lady looked Puertorican!’. http://abc.go.com/watch/suburgatory/SH55126593/VD55154908/thanksgiving

I’ve done work for ABC (“All My Children” & “One Life To Live”) and as a Puerto Rican Professional Performing Artist, I feel let down. When are these Networks going to put us in a better light & encourage our Latino youth to be better or better yet, just respect us for our accomplishments & contributions to our communities? So much of these stereotypes in Film & Television and we must take a stand. It’s hurting us people and till we do something about it, it’ll continue to hurt us in the future. Speak OUT!!!!!!!

Amaury Nolasco never should have accepted that script, and it never ceases to amaze me that well into the 21st century Puerto Ricans still have to hear bigoted stereotypes on major networks and elsewhere. I am a Vietnam era veteran, and a retired Police Officer and I never sold or did drugs in my life, and neither did my father before me. These networks have to get it in their heads that at worst stereotyping of any kind only promotes and reinforces more bigotry, and at best is politically incorrect in this day and age.

Shame on ABC and shame on Amaury…even after all this outcry from our community, that they haven’t come forward with a public apology. That saids a lot about what we’re are up against. They are probably justifying their actions & probably don’t see where they did wrong. It’s NOT acceptable & not only did Amaury throw his people under the bus, but himself as well. Mr. Nolasco should be hiding under a rock somewhere because we will not let down till this is resolved. I’m also extremely disappointed on some of the Latino Organizations out there that by now should have released statements or better yet, applied some pressure on ABC/Amaury & have not. Especially those in the entertainment industry that have some power & can make a difference in this situation we’re in. I think many are taking this laying down…if we make it OK this time, it’ll continue to be OK, then it’ll be much harder to stop later. People, the time is NOW!
